Why Fantasy NEEDS More Fantasy Jobs on YouTube

Fantasy worlds are filled with magic, monsters, ancient ruins, cursed artifacts, and god-level threats but when you look closely, the same few roles always seem to keep everything running. Warriors, mages, priests, nobles, and merchants handle almost everything… somehow.

That's because many people prefer stories with big, flashy plots. However, some other people like smaller, everyday stories -- the whole "cozy" angle is all about that, not about blowing shit up. Now I love a good explosion as much as the next guy, but that's not all I enjoy. Variety is good.

The magnetic secret inside steel finally explained

For years, scientists noticed that magnetic fields could improve steel, but no one knew exactly why. New simulations reveal that magnetism changes how iron atoms behave, making it harder for carbon atoms to slip through the metal. This slows diffusion at the atomic level and alters steel’s internal structure. The insight could lead to more efficient, lower-energy ways to make stronger steel.

And there's a hint about one way that secret but mundane smithcraft, as well as magical or superpowered manipulation of materials and forces, can create objects that work better.

This video shows a cow performing versatile tool use to scratch herself with a broom.  Note that cows are already enthusiastic tool users of equipment provided by humans, such as pressure-activated brushes and voluntary milking systems.

An interesting point that nobody has mentioned: cows have prehensile tongues. A prehensile appendage is any body part flexible and strong enough to grab or manipulate objects. Watch Veronica pick up the broom. She doesn't use her teeth or even her lips. She uses her tongue. Prehensility is actually a strong indicator of intelligence, because it allows a creature to lift, move, or use things much more effectively. Any time you see that feature, you should check for intelligence, because it is probably higher than average.

Want to play at home? If you have a cow, or know someone who does, then get a small broom like the one in the video. Use it a few times to groom the cow so she learns how useful it is. Then place it within her reach to see if she tries using it to scratch herself. This is probably more effective with just one or two cows, rather than a herd where they tend to groom each other's hard-to-reach spots. You can also watch cows that you see in other places.

recently in intersex community tags on tumblr , there is some shit-stirrer action . what start off as someone read reasonable discussion in bad faith turn into that whole friend group sling shit around at any other intersex blogger who defend original poster , or even question this group's motives and behaviour .

have no intention on directly weigh in , because do not think that will help anyone at this point - this group clearly do not care for discussion of any kind , not even if literally agree but still question behaviours , or word agreement slightly wrong . beyond that , honestly , just do not want to dedicate any of precious energy to circular discussions and trolls - this is no longer about opinions , this is about tear down vulnerable people .

instead , have different mission - for every post any of that group make in intersex tags , and especially if those posts directly mention all this bullshit , kossai will make at least 1 positive or fun post in return . for people who block that entire friend group , well , more positivity is always good ! and for people who do not block , or at least not yet , then this is small challenge to idea that community spaces should exist for shit fests like this .

not sure how long will be able to keep this up , but think any amount of time here is worth effort .

Today is sunny and frigid.  Everything is still covered in snow.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/26/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen at least one female and four male cardinals.

EDIT 1/26/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a pair of cardinals, a starling, and a mourning dove.

EDIT 1/26/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Well, I muffed the poll for the free epic, since someone helpfully pointed out that "Once the Avalanche Has Begun" is already posted. Sorry about that.

This leaves us with "A Fountain of Energy" which is spillover from the October 7, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] goatgodschild. It also fills the "Unstable" square in my 10-1-25 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem belongs to the Rutledge thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

Snowflake Challenge 13: Community

We spend a lot of time in fandom talking about community, and we mean a lot of different things by it. And that’s okay! I’m always interested in what other people think about community in fandom, and especially – considering the online nature of so much of fandom -- what are the places and groups that create/allow/encourage that community. These could be flashfic or challenge communities that encourage fanwork creation, discords for talking about the latest episode of your favorite show, exchanges, promptfests, watch-alongs, live streams… whatever promotes community for you.

Today’s challenge:

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community
.

Ancient people carried a wild potato across the American Southwest

Ancient travelers carried a wild potato across the Southwest, shaping its future for thousands of years.

Long before farming took hold, ancient Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest were already shaping the future of a wild potato. New evidence shows that this small, hardy plant was deliberately carried across the Four Corners region more than 10,000 years ago, helping it spread far beyond its natural range

Birdfeeding

It snowed yesterday, probably about 4 inches.  The ground is covered.  The trees still have a little sticking to them, but this is light fluffy snow so most has already fallen off.  The temperature is frigid.

I haven't been out to feed the birds yet, but they're active.  I've seen a flock of sparrows, a flock of mourning doves, two starlings, and a downy woodpecker.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I fed the birds.  I've seen a male and a female cardinal.

I put out water for the birds.

It's snowing slightly again.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

Snow is sifting down off and on, but the wind has picked up so it's drifting more in places.  Surprisingly the snowplow has already passed by at least once.  That usually doesn't happen until the day after the snow stops, because we're out in the country.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Today I'm making  Healthy Spice Quick Bread. This way we'll have something that isn't cold to go with the apple topping.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- The spice bread turned out pretty well.  The flavor is good, not particularly strong, a little on the dry side -- but it works great with the apple topping and probably would with any other wet topping. \o/

Warming spices have hot, aromatic qualities. They encourage body heat; they go well with other thermogenic foods. Their scent evokes warmth and comfort. That makes them ideal for cold days. Browse a list of warming spices; you probably have some in your cabinet already. Here is a FAQ list. Screw winter, make something redolent.

(Minimally-edited memory / noemata dump)

So we know that I’m specifically from the AU some others in our system came up with. But maybe it’s not really them coming up with that AU. It was me unknowingly trying to remember my previous life before I realized that I’m a separate Haruki.

The details I can remember are fuzzy at best, all I know is that I’m in a similar situation as the protagonist of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers. I’m from a dark future parallel timeline.

I’m wondering, in the actual Halo Around live's plot there are possible hints of my world ceasing to exist once the calamity stops and the main Shinymas timeline is saved. Is that the case on my end too? However, instead of disappearing completely, I ended up here. I might need to recheck these later.

If the 7 chosen idols of Project Refraction are resistance leaders, the lineup is very different from what I remember. My version has me, Koganeđź‘‘, Yuika🌧️, Luca, Madoka, and Nichika. I don’t remember if there’s a 7th member. As we know, these people are also here with us and are also very important to our system. I don’t remember exactly why this is the case. It could be that these specific timelines just happen to be the ones that collided. Either way, I don’t think of my past as “someone’s made-up story”, but it bothers me that the details of my memories are this hazy and has the feel of "poor worldbuilding". But that's also to be expected of these memories. I'm trying not to worry about my past being "full of plot holes" and stuff like that too much.

The world has never been the same again since Apotheosis happened. It does bless a lot of us with superhuman abilities, but at the same time the world also fell into ruin, plunged into an eternal night. Stars are still visible in the sky, but sunrise never comes. The night sky was admittedly pretty, with its stars and occasional aurora, but everything else was in ruin. Rain falls very often. Nobody knows how much time has passed, it's as if time has stood still.

I was granted the ability to near-effortlessly craft gears (if I don’t get them through other means such as stealing from the enemy forces). This was how I got things like my speech collar. My other gears are laser guns, both regular ones and floating, thought-controlled laser mini-turrets. I also have thought-controlled floating bombs, energy shields, and artificial wings that functions similarly to a jetpack, allowing me to levitate.

What caused me to lose my ability to speak? Nobody knows for sure, but the collar allows me to communicate with others regardless.

Other than the heightened intelligence and the personality change that came with it, every special ability I have are from advanced technology which might not be possible in this timeline or the main Shinymas timeline, as these would fall under “sci-fi” territory.

Here is a post about keeping water liquid for birds. If you have feeders, make sure they're full.

Today is cloudy and frigid.  The first fine snowflakes are beginning to fall.  Much snow is predicted for the weekend.

I fed the birds.  I've seen several sparrows, a pair of cardinals plus an extra male, and a starling.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I also put  more seed in the hopper feeder, so that's full in case snow covers the ground.  I've seen one female and four male cardinals.

Snow is still dusting down, just enough to leave a white film over flat things and pockets in the grassl.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

The birds have disappeared, likely holed up somewhere sheltered.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I brought in more firewood for the woodstove.

I've seen birds off and on, plus a fox squirrel.

EDIT 1/25/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

Snow has made a light layer of frosting over everything.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

A friend from Tennessee shared this video made by a nearby police station, a parody of "Let It Snow." Bear in mind that they're expecting a lot of snow, in an area that rarely gets any, so folks have neither the experience nor the equipment to deal with heavy snow safely.
